It is speculated that Giambi may be asked to go to the minors to work things out. As a veteran player, he must concent to this move and go through waivers which won't be a problem because no team in their right mind would take him. The former All-Star and MVP is batting just .196 with 3HR and 6RBI. Despite this, Joe Torre is sticking with Giambi, partially because he doesn't have many other options with Bernie Williams and Ruben Sierra hurt, and partially because he still thinks Giambi has some good baseball left in him. I've been watching Jason at the plate all season and I have to disagree with Joe. It seems every at bat he either walks or strikes out. HE CAN'T HIT! and if he does hit he just grounds out into the shift because he can't seem to hit the ball to the opposite field. Basically, Giambi is a HUGE waste of money and virtually untradable. The Yanks either have to stick with him and hope he comes around or release him and eat a BIG salary.

Giambi

3 In A Row

The Yankees won a great game Monday night, giving them their longest winning streak of the season at 3 games in a row. On a fly ball hit by Oakland's Eric Chavez, Shef ranged to his right and at the last minute the wind took the ball back to his left. As Shef tried to adjust he slipped on the wet grass causing the ankle sprain. The good news, he still caught the ball and is not expected to miss any time. Well that's exactly what Kevin Brown did as the Yankees shutout the A's for the second day in a row 6-0. I was on hand to witness this great game. It finally seems like the Yankees are starting to play like the Yankees. This game had everything from great pitching to defense to hitting.
With no outs and the bases loaded for the A's in the second inning it appeared as though Brown would implode yet again. The shocker, he did just the opposite and got out of the inning unscaved. After an Arod homer in the 4th and a Matsui RBI single in the 5th the Yanks took a 2-0 lead to the 8th. The struggling Tom Gordon came in and dominated the A's hitters retiring the side in order with one strikeout in the process. In the bottom half of the inning Tino Martinez came up with two on and no outs. He got the green light on a 3-0 pitch and planted it in the right field seats. Jorge Posada, the very next batter, hit a bomb into the upper deck in right field. Finally, Tanyon Sturtze came on to pitch a scoreless 9th. YANKEES WIN! THAAAAA YANKEES WIN!!!
It's too early to say, but with two consective shutouts where almost everyone performed well, we may finally be getting out of this funk. And with the Big Unit on the hill tomorrow the Yanks look to push their win streak to a season high 3 games.

randy ready to go

Big Stein suffers Big Upset at the Derby

Steinbrenner
George Steinbrenner's Kentucky Derby favorite horse Bellamy Road was upset in a big way finishing 7th out of a field of 20. With the second place horse, Closing Argument, going off at 72-1, this made for enormous payouts and Derby records for several bets: an exacta bet paid $9,815, a trifecta bet paid $133,135, and a $2 superfecta bet paid an astronomical $1.7 million!!! Mike Mussina looked like the pitcher of old tossing a complete game, 4 hit shutout over the A's. Hopefully this will be the game to jumpstart the otherwise lifeless Yanks. I watched this game from start to finish and let me tell you, it was UGLY. It started out well as the Yanks actually had the lead, though that lasted only two innings. Following with the trend of this year, Carl Pavano gave the team a good pitching performance, but the Yanks bats were nowhere to be found.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of the 8th the team showed some signs of life. John Flaherty led off with a walk. After a fielders choice by Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter singled. Jorge Posada was sent in to pinch hit for Tony Womack and delivered with a one-run single. Jeter and Posada successfully stole third and second respectively. Next up Gary Sheffield grounded out to shortstop, but drove in the tying run in the process.
Here's were everything started to go wrong. With two outs and Arod up at the plate a wild pitch was thrown. The pitch got only about 10 feet away from the catcher, but for some reason Jorge Posada and his below average speed thought he could make it to third. Needless to say he was thrown out and killed the rally in the process.
After a scoreless 9th things went from bad to worse in the top of the 10th. The Yanks closer Mariano Rivera walked the first batter, struck out the second, and hit the third putting runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out. The next batter hit a grounder to shortstop that Jeter couldn't handle, loading the bases. Next Scott Hatteburg hit a grounder to Tino Martinez at first who bobbled it then rushed a throw home despite having no chance of getting the runner. The throw was errant and allowed two runs to score without recording an out. Next, Arod made the third error of the inning on a grounder to third. After Rivera walked in the third run of the inning the Yanks finally retired the side. Needless to say this was very hard to watch. The Yanks of the past would have definately won this game, but this year it just seems they're flat with no confidence. So what better time to play them in a 4 game series then now? Well, the trend continued as the Yankees beat the Rays tonight 6-2 behind Mike Mussina. Moose pitched 7 innings giving up only 5 hits and two runs. The struggling Tom Gordon pitched a scoreless 8th and Rivera struck out the side in the 9th. Utility infielder Rey Sanchez broke the game open with a 2-run single in the 8th. Although nothing special, with a Red Sox and Orioles loss, its a step in the right direction. The Yankees now find themselves 6.5 games out of first place, but can hopefully build on this win.

Help on the way

Help is on the way for the Yanks. In the next week, assuming everything stays on schedule, the Yankees will be getting back two key players: Tanyon Sturtze and Ruben Sierra.

Tanyon Sturtze
Sturtze before he got hurt was probably the Yankees most effective and consistent reliever of the season. The Yanks finished up April with a record of 10-14, making this year the first time they've had a losing record since 1991. I attended the games Friday night and Sunday afternoon, both of which turned out to be extremely disappointing losses. Friday night, Randy Johnson pitched a complete game making only one mistake, a two-run homer to Eric Hinske. However, one mistake was all it too since the Yanks only got 3 hits and failed to score a run and lost 2-0. Sunday was even worse. Carl Pavano left in the 6th inning with a 3-run lead, but the bullpen couldn't hang on as the Yanks lost 8-6. Manager Joe Torre referred to this game as "an ugly game; if not the worst of the year, darn close." General Manager Brian Cashman added "I thought (Sunday's) game was the worst one we had this year." I'm so glad I could be in attendance for this game. The Yanks are 2-5 in games I attended leaving me wondering, should I write a letter to them and ask for my money back???

More bad news for the Yanks

Saturday was a disaster for the Yanks in more ways than one. Yet again, they fell behind big and early with a 6-0 score after 3 innings. The offensive and pitching struggles continued as they lost the game 10-2, giving up 19 hits and pushing their record to 7-11 which is good for last place in the AL East behind the lowly Devil Rays.

Not only is the team playing horribly, but injuries are already decimating the team. First, to the DL with a strained oblique muscle was Tanyon Sturtze, a key reliever. A few days ago, DH Ruben Sierra partially tore his right bicep putting him on the shelf for 4-6 weeks. Finally today, perhaps the most troubling injury came in the 6th inning. This is all the more troubling due to the fact that the 29 year old has already had surgery on this shoulder twice in his young career.

With all this bad news its tough to stay positive as a Yankees fan, but nonetheless I will be at the game tomorrow as the Big Unit tries to put an end to this unfortunate skid. I am bitterly disappointed, as I'm sure all Yankee fans are, by the lack of performance by our team. It is unbelievable to me that the highest-paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk. They are not playing like true Yankees. They have the talent to win and they are not winning. I expect Joe Torre, his complete coaching staff and the team to turn this around."

Being a huge Yankees fan, I must say that I'm utterly disappointed with this horrible start. It seems almost impossible that a team consisting of all current or former All-Stars could play so poorly. I know there's still approximately 150 games left in the season, but this is truly frustrating. I think Steinbrenner has the right to be angry. He's not paying over $200 million for a last place team. I know I get angry thinking about the $100 I've wasted on this miserable losses. I can imagine how he feels. What does everyone think? Is Steinbrenner overreacting? Is he right?

Stupid Red Sox Fan

Shef

On Thursday night, while the Yanks were playing the Red Sox, a ball was hit down the right field line. As Gary Sheffield went for the ball which was bouncing around the wall he was struck in the mouth by a Boston fan. Sheffield restrained himself from attacking the fan which is commendable. The fan was ejected after a short delay involving the police. Whether or not the fan intentionally hit Shef remains to be seen, but it does raise the question of whether or not fans are too close to the action. I for one think that this is an isolated incident concerning one stupid fan. What does everyone else think? Should the fan be arrested? Still Crosby does not have the job yet as another nonroster invitee, Damian Rolls, is in the mix. Although Rolls is struggling offensively he brings more to the table than Crosby because he plays all three outfield positions as well as three infield positions which could give the Yanks more versatility. Also in the mix are Russ Johnson and Colin Porter, but it appears as if it will come down to Crosby and Rolls.

Bernie taking some BP.

Bernie Williams took 77 swings in batting practice on Friday and felt no pain in his ailing back. Johnson threw 6 shutout innings of one hit ball against the Braves this week. Should be an awesome game with a lot of animosity and fights in the crowd. Hopefully there will be some new Boston Sucks shirts for me to buy.

This was one of the GREAT shirts i got on Jerome Ave last year outside the stadium.....priceless.

Until next week....

Spring Update

First off some strange news...
Last week there was a rumor that Mariano Rivera had been killed in a car accident. This rumor was soon proven false, but still nonetheless strange.

DAMN!!!
The Yankees have already sold more than 3 million tickets for the upcoming 2005 season. This is an astounding number considering the yanks led the league in attendance last year with 3,775,292 tickets, a franchise record. They appear to be on pace to break the record this year.

INJURY UPDATES

Jeter after fouling a ball off his left instep

Derek Jeter recently fouled a ball of his left instep and will sit out a few days although it is not considered serious.

Bernie Williams suffered a strained upper back while taking swings in batting practice. He's to throw every other day from now until opening day which will give him 6 outings and be plenty of work to be ready.

Paul Quantrill and Ruben Sierra both suffered strained rib cage injuries last week. Sierra has since rejoined the lineup and went 2 for 4 last game. Quantrill is scheduled to pitch for the first time since the industry Tuesday.

Steve Karsay, coming off shoulder surgery last year has been struggling this spring but put forth a good multi-inning outing yesterday.

YANKS IN ACTION

Finally some yankees who have had excellent springs so far...

Giambi ripping a ball to right

Jason Giambi, despite all the steroid controversy, appears to be regaining his old form. He's hit several home runs and even hit a triple yesterday, something he's done only 8 times in his career.

Newcomer Tony Womack is fitting right in, batting a sizzling .528, which could be an indication of a big year in pinstripes.

Randy Johnson: his arm is long as hell

The Big Three new pitchers, Randy Johnson, Jaret Wright, and Carl Pavano, are all putting forth stellar efforts thus far. The Yanks needed to improve in the starting pitching department this year and appear to have done so with these three.

Hideki "Mr. Consistent" Matsui in action

Hideki Matsui, Mr. Consistent, has been scorching the ball all over the field. He seems to get better every year as he becomes more accustomed to the Major League pitchers. Opposing pitchers beware.

At the time of this post just 12 days 17 hours 27 minutes and 31 seconds til Opening Day vs. the Boston Red Sucks at Yankee Stadium. I'll be there in the bleachers, Section 39 Row HH. Can't WAIT!! If you go here you can see the view from my seat, just follow the basic instructions (section 39 in right center field). Pretty cool.

Until next time, GO YANKS!!!

Jeter Pics

Hey guys, my internet is finally working again so i decided to post some pics on my blog. Below are 5 pics, all from that one amazing play.

I suppose I should give a little background so everyone can see just how amazing the play was.

I remember watching this game at home. July 1, 2004. It was very intense as all Yankees / Red Sox games seem to be recently. With the game tied at 3 in the top of the 12th inning there were runner on second and third and two outs. Boston's Trot (or as i call him "Slow Jog") Nixon stepped to the plate. He hit a weak blooper that appeared destined to fall in between Jeter, A-rod and Matsui down the third base line. As soon as it was hit I began cursing uncontrollably in anger, but wait..... what's that.....speeding toward the ball......its......its DEREK JETER.....running faster than i've ever seen as if he had a jet pack on his back. He reached out and caught the ball in fair territory, but with such momentum he was unable to stop. The low concrete wall would have most definately destroyed Jeter's legs if he had not went horizontal. Jeter flew into the stand clearing a second concrete wall and eventually came to a halt face first on a front row seat. At this point my angry curses turned into curses of joy and amazement for I, in my 21 years on this earth had never seen such a play. A bloody Derek Jeter then emerged from the stands, hat nowhere to be found, and received a HUGE ovation for he had just saved the day.

The Yanks failed to score in the 12th. Manny Ramirez a.k.a. filthy scumbag went on to hit a solo home run in the top of the 13th off of Tanyon Sturtze giving the BoSucks a 4-3 lead. At this point the curses were flying left and right, things were being hit and my family was scared of me. But soon all would be right. In the bottom of the 13th the Yanks did the unthinkable. Boston's Curtis Leskanic came in to get the first two outs quickly. Then Ruben Sierra single giving the Yanks a glimmer of hope. Next Miguel Cairo doubled scoring Sierra and tying the game at 4. John Flaherty was put in as a pinch hitter and delivered with a game winning ground rule double. YANKEES WIN THAAAAA YANKEES WIN! However, that means absolutely nothing since the starters get very little playing time early on. It's funny to see that after 1 World Series title in 86 years (the average person doesn't even live this long) that Red Sox fans feel the now have the ability to talk trash. In those same 86 years the Yanks won a total of 26 World Series and this year will get #27. With that out in the open here are some updates.

Randy Johnson who was sidelined by a strained calf muscle will make his first start tuesday in Orlando against the Braves.

Mike Stanton, who has been bothered by shoulder problems will pitch in a game today.

The Yanks, who will only send a split squad, battle it out with the HATED Red Sox tonight. Although the game is meaningless the media will make it seem like it matters and try to add fuel to this already heated rivalry.

On a side note, my internet has not been working so i have not been able to post recently. I'm doing this on my roommates computer which is very slow. I plan to post some more pictures, including the pic of Derek Jeter's face as a result of that courageous play he made diving into the stands in the previous pic, as soon as i get my internet back up.

Until next time

YANKEES RULE

RED SOX SUCK

HEART

Spring Training

As of today, all players have reported to the Yankees spring training facility in Tampa, FL. Although the majority of the roster is pretty much set in stone there is one spot up for grabs: the backup outfielder.
